Bob Simon Killed In a Car Crash. CBS News correspondent Bob Simon tragically killed in car crash in New York aged 73CBS News correspondent Bob Simon has died in a tragic car accident. According to USA Today, the longtime newsman was riding on New York’s West Side Highway headed southbound when the driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle struck a Mercedes-Benz at a red light before hitting the median, according to CBS.

Simon, who was in the backseat, was found unconscious. He suffered injuries to his head and stomach, according to CBS. He was taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead. The driver was taken to a different hospital; he was listed in stable condition and no charges have been filed.

The Mercedes was driven by 23-year-old Zachery Miller, who said that the car served into him. “He hit me, and he looked like he lost control of the car.” he told New York Post.

Simon had a long and distinguished career in journalism. He spent 40 days in an Iraqi prison, during which time he was tortured and spit at, according to USA Today. 60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeff Fager called the experience an “incredibly difficult situation to get through.” Simon served as an American Foreign Service officer for three years before joining CBS News in 1967.

terrible loss for all

“It’s a terrible loss for all of us at CBS News,” Fager said. “It is such a tragedy made worse because we lost him in a car accident, a man who has escaped more difficult situations than almost any journalist in modern times.

Fager also talked about Simon’s natural curiosity and passion. “If I said, ‘You know what, Bob, I have a really good story and it’s halfway around the world,’ he’d be on its way before you knew what it was about,” said Fager, according to USA Today. Over the course of five decades, Simon achieved an award-winning career that led him around the world, from Japan to Egypt, and from Vietnam to Paraguay.

Many people who knew Simon expressed distraught over his death. “So sad to see Bob Simon, who went to so many hard & dangerous places & had so many close calls in his career, killed in a car NY crash. RIP” political commentator Brit Hume tweeted.

“Bob was one of the finest reporters and writers in the business,” said CBS News executive Paul Friedman. “He, better than most, knew how to make pictures and words work together to tell a story, which is television news at its best.”
