QUEENS, NY- The nydailynews.com reports that a 62-year-old woman was struck by a car in Queens at about 10 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2018.
The accident occurred as a result of a collision between a 2017 Honda Accord and a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. The victim was on the sidewalk when the Honda lost control and drove over the curb. The victim was brought to Elmhurst Hospital with severe trauma to her leg. The injury is not considered life-threatening.
No arrests have been made, and the cause of the accident was not reported. Both drivers remained at the scene of the accident.
The number of pedestrians struck by vehicles has been on the decline in recent years in New York City. Through the Vision Zero program, the streets have been made safer for people walking. The initiative combines efforts such as making better and safer intersections and street designs, lowering the speed limit for vehicles within the city, and stricter enforcement of moving violations.
While pedestrian fatalities have gone down, the number of cyclists and vehicle occupants in the city rose slightly, indicating that while the initiative has helped those traveling on foot, it has not offered the same benefit to other people on the roads. Additionally, some feel that the efforts have been focused on some areas of the city, especially more affluent areas, and not in other areas.
Still, New York City’s declining pedestrian accidents are impressive considering the rate of pedestrian deaths nationwide has been on the rise.
