Sarah Mireles Jacobs, MD

Dr Sarah Mireles Jacobs is an Oculoplastic Reconstructive Surgeon who graduated from Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, completed Ophthalmology residency at Washington University in St Louis, then Oculoplastic Surgery fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.  She is on faculty at the University of Alabama Birmingham Callahan Eye Hospital.

Dr. Sarah Mireles Jacobs is an Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon.  She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona with a degree in Biology, and remained there to earn a Master’s degree in Education.  She attended medical school at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, then completed residency training in Ophthalmology at Washington University in St Louis.

After residency, she stayed on faculty at Washington University to serve as chief of their University Eye Service, managing trauma, ocular emergencies, and complex eye disease.  She completed a fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.  She then joined the faculty at the University of Alabama Birmingham Callahan Eye Hospital, where she served at the Division Head of Oculoplastic Surgery, trained residents, and helped bring new techniques and treatments into the region.

Dr. Jacobs is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is an active member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery as well as the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  She has been involved in medical service outreach around the world, including Chile, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Ghana, Ethiopia, and India.  She has authored several book chapters and research publications in her field, including studies of the effects of glaucoma surgery on the orbit, the prevention of vision loss during orbital surgery, and the impact of enucleation on patient quality of life.
