Brooklyn, New York –CBS New York is reporting that a three people were severely injured when a construction site scaffold frame collapsed as the workers were disassembling the scaffolding.*
Witnesses to the accident stated the construction crew supervisor received major injuries to his arm. Two pedestrians sustained injuries as they were walking by the construction accident area and were struck by falling objects as well as parts of the scaffolding.
The construction company was cited for the scaffolding accident which required one of the entrances to the Borough Hall subway station to be closed for several hours. A fine of $25,000 was issued by New York City Department of Buildings for the company’s inability to maintain a safe construction worksite.
Investigators are investigating the scene of the scaffolding collapse to determine the nature of the accident.
A new regulation in New York City that began on March 1, 2018 building construction workers to take the “OSHA 10” class. The “OSHA 10” class is a 10-hour safety training class required under Local Law 196 of 2017. By 2019, any construction site that requires a Site Safety Plan must have Site Safety Coordinator, Construction Superintendent, or Site Safety Manager onsite and must have received safety train of 40 or more hours.
Construction companies and their workers have a responsibility to maintain a safe construction area to prevent injuries to their workers and pedestrians in the area. When a worker or a pedestrian is injured or killed due to unsafe construction practices, a lawsuit for compensation may be filed to recover compensatory damages.
