Boy Scouts of America Sexual Abuse Was More Pervasive Than Previously Believed

Boy Scouts of America abuse

Time Magazine reports that numerous victims sexually assaulted by Boy Scout scoutmasters and other volunteers must fight for priority in bankruptcy court in hopes that they will receive some of the compensation due to them if the Boy Scouts file for bankruptcy protection. Some victims might never recover a penny if they do not work quickly and file a claim in court as soon as possible. At this time, approximately 428 former Boy Scouts members who are victims of sexual abuse at the hands of scoutmasters describe the Boy Scouts as an organization rife with pedophilia.

For about 109 years, the Boy Scouts of America portrayed itself as the bastion of teaching boys how to become responsible, polite, and trustworthy men. Few people on the outside knew that the organization hid a deep dark secret. Similar to other sex abuse scandals in the news, many volunteers sexually abused young adolescent boys while the Boy Scouts of America buried the truth and protected the guilty.

Somehow, the Boy Scouts of America managed to maintain a pristine, wholesome public image despite the rampant pedophilia practiced by its rank and file. Former U.S. Presidents exalted the lessons they learned scouting as guideposts throughout their adult life and claimed allegiance to the Boy Scouts as evidence of their distinctive character.

According to Time Magazine, the Boy Scouts of America are a federally chartered organization. As such, the Boy Scouts must make annual reports to the U.S. government. While expelling volunteers for sexual abuse at a rate of about one per month, the Boy Scouts maintained the veneer of the model civic organization.  Litigants who have filed legal claims against the Scouts endeavor to find justice and change the public perception of this once hallowed institution.

Advocates for men and boys abused by Scout leaders argue that the Boy Scouts have tried to cover up wrongdoing by their members of nearly 100 years. Over that time, experts say that at least 12,254 boys were victimized by 7,800 attackers from 1944 until 2016. No one knows the number of victims there were before World War II, and even these numbers are less than the actual numbers.

I want to give a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Benita Rollis for the exemplary manner in which my case was handled from the inception to the end. Ms. Rollis was compassionate, friendly, understanding, professional, accurate, informative and patient. She took the time and effort to explain the process, timeline, the various documents involved and how to go about obtaining certain forms. She was definitely on point. Christina Morace my Paralegal at Parker Waichman’s Long Island office successfully obtained not one but two World Trade Center Victim Compensation awards for myself. She was knowledgeable, always there for me and fought for the compensation I deserved for working at Ground Zero and then unfortunately getting two 911 related ailments. I will highly recommend Christina to anyone who has to go through the Victim’s Compensation process.
