The most frequently struck objects include trees, utility poles and traffic barriers.
The circumstances contributing to these accidents include alcohol, speeding, drivers falling asleep, distracted driving and poor visibility. Speeding is the number one reported cause of fatal car accidents according to the Insurance Information Institute. Almost 18% of deadly crashes involved a driver traveling above the speed limit, racing, or driving too fast for traffic, road, and weather conditions. Alcohol is the next most likely cause of fatal crashes. In recent years, distracted driving has become a bigger problem and has led to more car accident. Cellphone use is to blame in about 14% of fatal distracted driving accidents.
In addition to staying alert and not driving under the influence, one of the most important things for drivers to do is to use their seat belt every time they are on the road. The risk of dying in a car accident can be cut by 45% by wearing a seatbelt.
