STATEN ISLAND, NY- The silive.com reports that commuters experienced delays on Monday morning, June 4, 2018, following an accident on Goethals Bridge.
Traffic heading towards New Jersey was already moving slowly because of construction work. The accident caused delays for drivers heading towards Staten Island as well. The Staten Island Expressway was moving slowly as well.
Heavy traffic conditions can increase the number of car accidents that occur. Over the past few years, there has been an increase in drivers on the road. Thisalone can cause an increase in traffic-accidents because the more peopledriving, the more people on the road to potentially be involved in crashes. However, the problem is also that while the number of drivers on the road has increased a great deal, the number of roads for them to drive on has increased only a very small amount. The result is that there are more drivers, and those drivers are more likely to be crowded together.Thismakes accidents even more likely.
The situation can create a vicious cycle because one of the causes of traffic congestion is traffic accidents. About 25% of “surprise traffic jams” are caused by car accidents. Surprise traffic jams are temporary and unexpected disruptions to the flow of traffic, as opposed to congestion that occurs at a certain time every day, like rush hour. The result is, heavy traffic leads to more accidents, and more accidents lead to heavier traffic.
While you have no control over what other drivers on the road are doing, you can avoid being part of the problem by staying alert, staying calm and avoiding bouts of road rage, and never drinkand drive.
