The U.S. News and World Report filed a report on this topic recently. The short answer to the question is: young people are addicted to vaping at levels cigarettes never approached. The entire answer is a bit more complicated, however. In about 15 years, e-cigarettes have gone from being the next great smoking cessation product to causing a health scare that is sweeping the nation and threatening to injure or kill thousands. The frightening thing is that there is no clear answer as to why vaping is making people — and not just kids — so sick. To date, twelve people have died, and more than 800 have been diagnosed with a lung disease attributable to vaping.
According to the U.S. News and World Report article, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that 25% of high school seniors vaped. Shockingly, one out of every eleven eighth graders vaped or used an e-cigarette once in a 30-day span. Experts think this widespread use among younger populations stems from the flavoring added to the vape pens or e-cigarettes.
Public health experts caution people to stay away from vaping products because the user cannot be certain what chemicals are in the vaping “pod.” Researchers have found vitamin e acetate, toxins, cannabinoids, THC, nicotine, and oil-based flavorings in vape pods and e-cigarette cartridges. Scientists do not know what is in these items, let alone can they predict how these substances will interact with the human body.
Science is racing to catch up with technology, and researchers recognize they must catch on faster than they did with cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking became popular in the late 1800s. By 1960, scientists learned that cigarette smoking is a potentially lethal habit. Scientists do not have the luxury of time to figure out why vaping products and e-cigarettes are making people ill.
