USA- Keprtv.com reports that Mazda issued a recall of 156,000 vehicles including cars and crossover SUVs as part of the Takata airbag recall. Mazda issued the recall on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. The vehicles will have to have their defective airbag components replaced.
The models of Mazda vehicles impacted include Mazda 6 Sedans from 2010 through 2013, Mazda CX-7 crossover SUVs from 2010 through 2012, Mazda CX-9 crossover SUVs from 2010 through 2015 and Mazda RX-8 sports cars from 2011.
The concern related to the vehicles is that the passenger-side airbag inflators present a risk of exploding if the vehicle is involved in a crash in which the airbags are deployed. The explosion can cause shrapnel to burst out and potentially injure or kill vehicle occupants.
The Takata recall has been massive and nearly every vehicle manufacturer has been impacted by the defective inflators. The inflators used in these devices can degrade when exposed to weather with high humidity or cycling temperatures. As a result, the inflator becomes unstable and dangerous.
Vehicles in certain climate zones are more at risk than others. The recall has prioritized vehicles sold in or owned in warmer climates, such as places in the sun belt. Some of the Mazda vehicle recalls were applied to all states though.
Dealers are going to be informed of which vehicles are subject to this most recent expansion of the recall. Notice will go out in November to the owners of vehicles that need to be serviced. The dealerships will replace the airbag components at no cost to the owners.
The recall impacts around 40 million vehicles worldwide, but that number could still increase.
