Hand Sanitizer Benzene Cancer Risk
According to a news report posted on foxbusiness.com, a Florida-based company is recalling its hand sanitizer products after cancer-causing Benzene was discovered in the products. The recalled hand sanitizer has been distributed throughout the Seattle area. The recall announcement states that the company launched a recall after some of its hand sanitizer products after government officials discovered the cancer-causing chemical in certain lots of the product.
According to a recall notice published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Salon Technologies International Inc. has issued a recall Antica Ocean Citron Hand Sanitizer alcohol gel after tests revealed that one lot of the product contained Benzene. The recalled lot is identified by its lot number, which is 1166A. The recalled products were distributed throughout the Seattle area. They have an expiration date of June 18, 2023.
Salon Technologies International Inc. stated that it had not received any adverse incident reports related to the recalled product.
Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. The chemical can cause cancer a person has received high levels of repeated Benzene exposure. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also states that Benzene damages the immune system and prevents cells from working properly.
The effects vary depending on how the person is exposed. Symptoms of Benzene exposure range from nausea and irregular heartbeats to seizures and death.
Salon Technologies International Inc. has notified its distributors and is working to have the products returned. Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled product and return the products to the place of purchase. The company said that Benzene is not an ingredient that they use in any of the recalled products.
In 2021 and 2022, Benzene was discovered in several products, including sunscreens, dry shampoos, and conditioners. This past summer, Banana Boat’s Hair and Scalp sunscreen sustained a recall Benzene was discovered in routine testing. Sure and Brut-branded antiperspirant aerosol sprays and deodorants were recalled once officials found Benzene contamination.
