New York, New York – A News story on ABC7ny.com states that elected officials in Manhattan seek change after a woman tragically died after she fell from a building rooftop during an overcrowded party. The fatal accident was reported at around 3 o’clock in the morning last Saturday.
The victim, a 24-year-old woman, was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where the woman was tragically pronounced dead.
Local officials state that the woman’s tragic death is the most recent in a rash of documented parties that “exceed safe occupancy levels on East Village rooftops.“ The city officials also stated that they had been individuals engaging in rooftop hopping from one rooftop to another.
New York City Councilmember Carlina Rivera is currently drafting two new bills that will address these issues. According to Councilmember Rivera, she will continue pursuing her legislation that will make sure these fatal incidents never happen again. She believes that building landlords must be held responsible when they do not make sure their rooftops in outdoor spaces are safely accessible and follow all legal regulations. Rivera believes the recent tragedy demonstrates how mismanaged and overcrowded rooftop parties have become dangerous due to a lack of monitoring and safety protocols.
The location of the incident has a barbecue grill, and the area has been used in the past for parties. According to the news report and information provided by detectives, the woman was not a resident of the building and was at a party of approximately 20 people when the woman tragically “fell into a gap between two building structures.” The fatal rooftop fall accident is currently under investigation by law enforcement officers.
