Xarelto has been associated with serious, disabling or fatal injury
Lawsuits on Behalf of Patients Who Suffered From Xarelto. Our firm is investigating potential lawsuits on behalf of patients who suffered from Xarelto side effects. According to a report by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), Xarelto has been associated with “serious, disabling or fatal injury,” including blood clots or thromboembolic events.
Xarelto is used to prevent blood clots, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism in patients who are undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery. Like Pradaxa, it is an alternative to warfarin (Coumadin), a much older anticoagulant.
ISMP QuarterWatch Report: ‘Xarelto’ Linked to Blood Clots and Pulmonary Embolism
The ISMP is a non-profit consumer safety group; several times a year, the organization issues a QuarterWatch report to update the public about the safety profile of suspect drugs. The report is based on data submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration through the agency’s Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS). In October 2012, ISMP issued a QuarterWatch report for adverse events reported to the FDA during first quarter of the year. The report focused on four drugs, including Xarelto, Tekturna, Actos and Cymbalta.
‘Xarelto’ was associated with the greatest number of adverse events for the first quarter of 2012 with 356 reports of
“serious, disabling or fatal injury”. The ISMP stated that “the largest group of rivaroxaban cases described the development of severe blood clots in younger patients (median age 66) taking the anticoagulant drug after hip or knee replacement surgery.” According to the report, blood clots the predominant adverse event reported to the FDA for first quarter of 2012, accounted for 158 cases.
Like warfarin, ‘Xarelto’ is approved to prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients who have undergone knee or hip replacement surgery. Deep vein thrombosis is when a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the leg. If a part of this clot breaks off, it can be swept into the bloodstream and become lodged in the lungs; this is known as a pulmonary embolism and may be a life-threatening condition.
