STATEN ISLAND, NY- According to Silive.com, a motor vehicle collision occurred on the West Shore Expressway in Huguenot on Staten Island, New York.
The incident took place at about 11:12 a.m. One of the people involved was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The condition of the injured person is not yet known at this time.
One car that sustained damage was seen at the site of the crash. The vehicle had apparently rolled over and was later taken away from the scene by a tow truck.
Only around 2.1 percent of all car accidents involve a vehicle turning over. These crashes tend to be some of the most severe collisions on the road though, and greater than one out of every three people who die in car accidents are killed in rollover accidents.
Some vehicles are more likely to overturn than others. Taller vehicles that are higher off the ground have higher centers of gravity and are therefore more likely to roll than are vehicles such as cars which ride closer to the ground. Vehicles that are most likely to roll over include SUVs, vans, and pickup trucks.
It is possible to reduce the chances of a rollover crash by not overloading the vehicle, especially on the top of the vehicle, as this makes the vehicle even more top heavy and therefore more prone to flipping over. Drivers can also reduce their chances of being involved in a rollover incident by checking their tires to ensure that they are properly inflated and in good working condition.
People who wear their seatbelts increase their chances of surviving rollover collisions.
