According to a news report posted on torquenews.com, the ongoing Takata airbag safety recall claimed one more victim. A young, Pensacola driver has been tragically killed when an airbag housing exploded. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a minor traffic accident caused fatal injuries when the vehicle’s airbag housing exploded, shooting shrapnel from the airbag housing into the young driver’s face and neck.
It appears the historic Takata safety recall concerning its defective airbag containers was initiated several years ago. However, many cars are sold with the defect to unknowing car buyers. Although a majority of the airbag recalls were announced a few of years ago, there are still many vehicles on the road that have potentially exploding airbag housings.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that that it is currently investigating the details of this tragic issue. This tragic death brings the total lives lost in the United States to 28.
Many deaths have happened in Honda sedans, some of them dating back to the early 2000s. According to reporting from the Torque News, several Honda Civics and Honda Accords car accidents related to this issue were higher.
In this tragic accident near Pensacola, Florida, the driver-side airbag inflator housing exploded during a minor collision. Airbag manufacturer, Takata, once used ammonium nitrate to inflate its airbags during a crash. Poor sealing and detritus contaminated the airbag housing during the manufacturing process. Ammonium nitrate can become increasingly more volatile until it erupts explosively, shattering the air bag’s housing. When the airbag explodes, metal shards are thrown around the vehicle with deadly results.
In this airbag death, the Highway Patrol reported the fatal accident occurred at around 6 PM. The accident occurred when a white car, failed to yield, pulled out and in front of the pickup truck. The driver of the Ford pickup truck passed away as a result of his injuries. The AP reported that the Florida Highway Patrol trooper issued a complaint with the safety agency. The investigating Florida Highway Patrol trooper stated that the driver was killed due to the driver’s side airbag deployment.
The Takata airbag safety recall has been the most extensive automotive safety recall in U.S. history. More than 67 million inflators were recalled, though millions still not been repaired. This recall has been the most extensive safety recall in the U.S., but also drove Takata into bankruptcy. Criminal charges were filed against the manufacturer.
To see if your vehicle has an open recall, visit the NHTSA’s website at Nhtsa.gov. Key in your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). The NHTSA urges car owners to have all open recalls repaired as quickly as possible. These repairs are fixed at no charge.
