According to an online news report posted on autoblog.com, Stellantis has initiated a recall of more than 135,000 Ram and Jeep vehicles that have been equipped with its 3.0-liter EcoDiesel six-cylinder. The recall was started to correct possible high-pressure fuel pump failures leading to dangerous accidents and causing the vehicles to become undrivable. The Stellantis’ defect recall says that 2014-2019 Ram 1500s and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokees were shipped with a fuel pump that might fail prematurely. Although the recall provides very few details about the problem, Stellantis believes that the failures come on gradually. The company states that owners might notice a check engine light turn on or might detect unusual noise coming from the fuel pump before the motor vehicle becomes undrivable. Customers who have a recalled vehicle will receive their recall notices in late July or early August.
The recall report states that an HPFP failure could “introduce internally failed component debris into the fuel system,” resulting in fuel starvation. As the vehicle’s motor does not receive fuel, an unexpected loss of motor power can cause the motor vehicle to crash without any prior warning. Stellantis stated that the company knows of over 200 incident reports of premature pump failure. However, the company claims that no injuries, deaths, or accidents have been linked to the fuel pump failure problem.
Accidents caused by the recall may injure the operator and their occupants, as well as other motorists sharing the road with one of the recalled vehicles. This defect could also cause accidents with pedestrians.
