According to an online recall report posted on autoevolution.com, Renault has initiated a recall of its ZOE electric vehicle. The recall involves a battery pack fire risk. Renault’s recall announcement states that ZOE electric vehicles manufactured between January 13, 2021, and February 22, 2021, have a defect, and some cars have “an internal short circuit in the battery.” Renault’s recall letter also states that the issue “will lead to increased risk of fire.”
Renault’s recall announcement did not state which battery is connected to the fire issue. However, the information document indicates that the BT4 XLR (Extra Long Range) high-voltage battery pack has a defect. The article states that they believe Renault is speaking about its “EV 50 battery pack.”
Renault developed its EV 50 battery pack with LG Energy Solution. There are two other significant recalls connected to LG Energy Solution’s battery packs. Those battery packs were used in the Hyundai Kona Electric Vehicle and the Chevy Bolt EV. In both situations, Hyundai and GM urged LG to subsidize the recall costs since the recalls concerned LG’s battery cell manufacturing defects.
Renault did not reveal how the internal short-circuit happens. The report states that the issue could be related to the assemblage of the battery packs and may not be an issue that the LG Energy Solution cells caused.
