According to a news release published on carscoops.com, Thomas Built Buses, a Daimler Trucks North America company, issued a recall of its 2023 Saf-T-Liner EFX school buses. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall notice states that the affected Thomas Built Buses 90 passenger-plus-driver buses do not have the correct number of emergency exits. More specifically, the recalled school buses have not been equipped with an emergency exit roof hatch. This means the school buses fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 217 S5.2.2.3.
The missing emergency exit roof hatch makes exiting the school bus after an accident or emergency easier and reduces the risk of injury, according to the recall notice. Daimler Trucks North America initially received a dealership notification concerning the issue back on June 26, 2022. That report stated that three new buses did not have an emergency exit roof hatch. Daimler Trucks North America then launched an investigation to resolve if there were more buses constructed with the manufacturing defect.
Authorized Daimler Trucks North America service departments will modify the school buses by adding emergency exit roof hatches. All owners of the affected school buses will be notified by first-class mail by September 13, 2022. Those owners will be notified of the recall and how to have the emergency exit roof hatches installed.
