People Magazine featured a story concerning the dangers of textured silicone gluteal implants. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating claims that textured breast implants cause anaplastic large cell lymphoma, which is a form of a rare cancer of the blood. Now, after one woman died from anaplastic large cell lymphoma who had textured gluteal implants, researchers are sifting through the question. By February of 2019, the FDA received information about 457 confirmed cases of anaplastic large cell lymphoma in women who had textured breast implants. Nine of the women diagnosed with the deadly form of cancer passed away from the disease in the United States.
According to the report appearing in People Magazine, a 49-year-old woman received textured gluteal silicone implants. The woman experienced difficulties after the procedure. She had pockets of ulcers and fluid build-up in the region of the implants. Within a year, doctors diagnosed her with advanced anaplastic large cell lymphoma. The cancer metastasized. The aggressive form of cancer spread throughout her body, including spawning masses in her lungs. Oncologists attempted to treat the disease with strong doses of chemotherapy. Sadly, the woman died within several months of receiving her diagnosis. The authors of the case study who reported on this tragic case believe that more research must be done so that women might have a better understanding of the health risks involved with cosmetic implant surgery.
Scientists with the University of Southern California have failed to conclusively link textured implants to anaplastic large cell lymphoma. However, the researchers found what they describe as an “association” between the two. As a result of this potentially lethal health scare, many women who chose to have silicone implant surgery are now choosing to have the implants removed. Removal surgery is known as “explanting” and is becoming a frequent procedure many women elect to endure because of the possible health risks associated with textured cosmetic silicone implants.
