BALDWIN, NY – According to Newsday.com, a NICE bus was hit by a car in Baldwin on causing injuries to five individuals. The injured persons were all taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries, which are not life-threatening.
The bus was stopped while passengers were disembarking and boarding the bus when a vehicle that was stopped behind the bus slammed the back of the bus. The car that struck the bus was reportedly hit by a third vehicle causing it to collide with the bus. Two people who had been on the bus were transported to the South Nassau Communities Hospital along with three people who were in the smaller vehicles.
Rear-end collisions are some of the most common crashes on the road. These accidents are almost always the result of driver mistakes, such as speeding or not paying attention to the road. Distracted driving is a common cause of rear-end accidents as people who are looking at their phones or otherwise distracted are more likely to fail to see a vehicle in front of them.
Many rear-end crashes are fairly minor because they happen at low speeds. These crashes may not cause severe injuries but can still be expensive because of the damage that they cause to vehicles. However, there are about 17,000 rear-end crash-related fatalities in the United States every year.
Vehicle technology is starting to be able to avoid most of these crashes by identifying objects that are too close and either alerting the driver or automatically braking. This technology is capable of saving thousands of lives every year, and many safety experts believe that it should be included in all vehicles.
