About one out of every five deadly car accidents involve a single-vehicle that departs from the roadway. Many of these collisions involve the vehicle flipping. Over 8,000 people in the United States die in rollover accidents every year. Crashes where single-vehicle veers off the road are the leading cause of vehicle fatalities.
These crashes can be prevented. Some ways to reduce the risk of being involved in a deadly one-car crash include avoiding roads that are curvy, and not driving after winter storms make the roads icy and unsafe.
The three best ways to avoid single-vehicle accidents are to refrain from speeding, never driving drowsy, and never driving drunk. Distracted driving is also a risk factor. Drivers who are paying attention to their smartphones instead of the road are at a much higher risk of all types of collisions.
One frequent cause of rollovers is drivers who attempt to correct when they begin to veer from the road but oversteer and jerk their vehicle in the opposite direction. This action can cause vehicles to flip. It is better to slow down gradually.
