HARRISBURG, P.A. — A man who sustained severe injuries when his Harley-Davidson wobbled and crashed blames his injuries on a design flaw with the bike, according to Penn Live. The injured man, who was fortunate to survive the crash, alleges in a lawsuit now pending in the United States District Court in Harrisburg, P.A. that the famous motorcycle brand’s bikes are well-known for having a wobble that could lead to an accident. The man claimed in the lawsuit that he was riding his father’s Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic when the bike began to weave uncontrollably while trying to negotiate a curve in the road. The wobble threw him violently into the ground, according to the complaint filed in court.
The motorcycle rider who filed the lawsuit is not the first person to complain about the issue. Harley-Davidson recognized that their bikes tend to wobble and weave at average speeds and under normal conditions. Responding to numerous complaints about the issue, Harley-Davidson published instructions to deal with the problem. The company advises its riders to loosen their grip on the handlebars and wait until the wobbling ends before applying the brakes.
The instructions provided by Harley-Davidson are flawed, according to the injured victim. The motorcycle rider could maintain control over the motorcycle if the rider has enough room to do so. Without enough room, the rider could easily lose control and crash. Any crash on a motorcycle could severely injure, maim, or kill the driver and passenger on the bike. Also, Harley-Davidson does not consider those other vehicles could be in the path of the bike that is wobbling—thereby causing an accident.
Motorcycle riders, if they survive a crash, can suffer a variety of severe injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, lacerations, and road rash. Wearing a helmet while riding could reduce the risk of a rider sustaining a head injury in a crash.
