Around 300 people die each year in pedestrian accidents across the state of New York, according to statistics maintained by the Department of Health for the state of New York. Additionally, hospital emergency departments across the state treat approximately 12,500 pedestrians each year for injuries sustained in collisions with motor vehicles. An average of 3,027 pedestrians must be hospitalized each year for treatment due to injuries suffered after getting hit by a car.
According to the Vision Zero program instituted by the Office of the Mayor for the City of New York, the number of fatal pedestrian crashes in the borough has increased by eleven percent in the last three decades. The fatality rate is 1.4 fatalities per every 100,000 people, which is the lowest out of all five New York City boroughs. The most significant number of pedestrian fatalities may be found between the East Shore and North Shore of Staten Island.
Approximately 70 percent of all fatal pedestrian accidents involve a passenger car across New York City. Those numbers are significantly higher on Staten Island. Estimates show that nearly 9-90 percent of all fatal pedestrian crashes involve passenger cars. Finally, the authors of the Vision Zero program suggest that dangerous driving choices are the primary cause of fatal pedestrian-car accidents on Staten Island.
