Cellphone’s Contact List Helps Police Identify Pedestrian Killed in a Deer Park Accident
According to an article posted on newsday.com, the Suffolk County Police and the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a pedestrian accident at Bay Shore Road and Washington Avenue in Deer Park. The accident involved a pedestrian who was fatally struck by a motor vehicle. Tragically, the Suffolk County Police Department and other law enforcement agencies were unable to identify the victim.
According to the news report, the victim was not carrying any identification with him. The victim also did not have fingerprints in law enforcement databases, and there were not matching missing-person reports. However, law enforcement caught a break in the case. The pedestrian was carrying a cellphone at the time he was struck by a Nissan Sentra near the Washington Avenue intersection.
The Suffolk County Police Department’s press office stated that detectives were able to identify the victim through his cellphone’s contact list. After a few calls, the detectives made contact with the victim’s landlord. The landlord then provided contact details for the victim’s family. The pedestrian was identified as a 51-year-old man who resided off of Scott Avenue.
The fatal accident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. and the victim tragically passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, New York.
According to the press office, 40 mph is the posted speed limit on the road. The driver did not receive a summons.
According to the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research at the University at Albany, thirty-one pedestrians were struck and killed by a motor vehicle in Suffolk County in 2019. Nassau County had 29.
