Dangerous Driver Causes a Severe Accident in Clinton Hill, New York
CLINTON HILL, NY – According to an online news report posted on streetsblog.org, a reckless and dangerous driver caused a severe accident that injured two construction workers. The workers were at a Clinton Hill construction job about one block from the accident that killed a 3-month-old baby and led to a week of accusations against the Mayor’s administration.
According to witnesses, a driver in a BMW was speeding along Clinton Avenue between Green Avenue and Gates Avenue. The BMW allegedly had illegal temporary plates from the state of New Jersey. The witnesses stated that the BMW’s driver swerved at a high rate of speed to avoid a slower vehicle at the construction site. The BMW driver then “lost control” of their car and struck a construction barrier. The construction barrier then collided with the two construction workers.
Surveillance camera video footage captured by a neighbor’s front porch revealed how fast the BMW driver was driving.
A 27-year-old worker and a 41-year-old worker sustained accident injuries, and they were transported to Methodist Hospital. Their accident injuries were non-life-threatening, according to the NYPD.
Another witness stated that the driver of the BMW was impatient with a car that was stopped in the southbound traffic lane, tried to speed around it, and then swerved to avoid a head-on collision. The witness believed the driver was exceeding the speed limit by at least 20 MPH.
The news report asserts that drivers commonly speed and swerve around slow or stopped vehicles in the area. One witness stated that they have observed that type of driving along Clinton Avenue “hundreds of times in the last 18 months.”
Since 2019, there have been approximately 118 accidents on the portion of Clinton Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Park Avenue. City records state that these accidents injured six pedestrians, seven cyclists, and 38 motorists. Clinton Avenue was going to be redesigned in 2016 to make the area safer for pedestrians. A large number of the families in the area are young, and the area has a low rate of car ownership. About 63% of the households in Clinton Hill do not own a vehicle.
Nine days ago, a 3-month-old child was tragically killed while riding in a stroller. The child’s mother was trying to cross Vanderbilt Avenue when a reckless driver drove the wrong way and collided with a vehicle, and the two vehicles collided with the victims. The driver allegedly had a bad driving record and was an unlicensed driver.
