Three pedestrian accidents

PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida — One pedestrian died, and two others sustained critical injuries in three separate motor vehicle crashes in Pinellas County, Florida. Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputies said that at least one person would face charges for failing to remain at the accident scene according to the Tampa Bay Times. The medical conditions of the two pedestrians who reportedly survived are unknown at this time.

St. Petersburg police officers responded to the scene of a severe pedestrian accident between 28thStreet North and Central Avenue. The call for the crash came in to police around 8:30. The preliminary reports suggest that a 74-year-old man attempted to cross the road while in a crosswalk and was run down by another male driving a Ford F-150 pickup. The driver later determined to be a 48-year-old male from St. Petersburg, did not stay at the scene of the crash. Investigators captured the fleeing driver later in the evening. He will face charges associated with failing to remain on scene among other charges. Hospital staff at Bayfront Health described the pedestrian’s injuries as “life-threatening.”

The second pedestrian accident in Pinellas County happened 1:20 a.m. in Seminole. Law enforcement officers responded to Starkey Road and Park Boulevard. The officers found a 21-year-old man from Seminole was heading northerly on Starkey Road when he hit a 41-year-old man. The man passed away at the locus of the crash according to investigators. Police say he was not in the crosswalk when he was hit. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said that they did not suspect the driver to have been driving at an excessive speed or under the influence at the time of the crash.

Finally, a 34-year-old man sustained serious injuries around 2:30 a.m. when he was hit by a 28-year-old male driving a Chevrolet Impala. St. Petersburg Police say the pedestrian had a quantity of alcohol in his blood but did not say how much. Officers reported that the driver cooperated with the investigation. The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries as well.

Pedestrians rarely evade injury when struck by a motor vehicle. The injuries can be extensive and very costly. However, if the pedestrian has an auto insurance policy, he or she can apply for Personal Injury Protection benefits, called PIP to help defray some of the costs.
