Photoelectric Alarm Recall
According to an online news report posted on foxbusiness.com, combination carbon monoxide and smoke alarms sold at Walmart are being recalled. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that thousands of carbon monoxide and smoke detectors sold throughout the U.S. were recalled after it was discovered that the alarms failed to detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. The manufacturer, Universal Security Instruments Inc., initiated a recall of 8,000 of its 2-in-1 Photoelectric Smoke & Fire + Carbon Monoxide Alarms. The recall announcement states that the smoke and fire alarms fail to warn customers of the presence of dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, creating a danger of carbon monoxide poisoning or death.
So far, there have been two incident reports concerning the recalled units “failed to alarm for the presence of carbon monoxide within the specified time requirement.” The CPSC urges customers who have the recalled model “to immediately contact Universal Security Instruments for a free replacement alarm.” The CPSC recommends that customers continue to use their current alarm until they have a replacement. According to the recall, the affected smoke and carbon dioxide alarms were sold to Walmart and electrical distributors from June 2017 until December 2019.
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that cannot be detected by sight or scent. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 400 people in the United States die of carbon monoxide poisoning every year. The CDC says that carbon monoxide poisoning is “entirely preventable” when people know the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide positioning.
