MIAMI, Fla. — Three major pharmaceutical retailers have recalled medications containing Ranitidine because of the presence of excessive amounts of the potential carcinogen NDMA. The Miami Herald reported that this latest recall is the second recall in one week of a drug containing NDMA in levels that exceed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s allowable standards of consumption. The pharmaceutical manufacturer Apotex made the pills now subject to the recall program. Apotex has not learned of any illnesses or injuries caused by the recalled medicine.
Laboratory testing shows that NDMA has a probability of causing cancer. Consequently, the FDA, national pharmaceutical retailers, and Apotex are working jointly to recall all of the Ranitidine products that potentially contain NDMA. The recall involves Ranitidine Hydrochloride in 75 mg and 150 mg tablets. However, the recalled medications are marketed under the generic store names.
Walmart removed from its shelves its Equate Ranitidine 150 mg bottles in 24, 65, and 130-counts. The NDC numbers for the recalled quantities from Walmart are 49035-100-00, 49035-117-06, as well as 49035-100-07.
Walgreens pulled its store brand as well. Walgreens marketed its Ranitidine product as Wal-Zan Ranitidine tablets. The recalled products were 75 mg in 30-count bottles. The NDC number for that product is 0363-1029-03. Walgreens also removed its Wal-Zan Ranitidine tablets in 24, 65, 95 and 200-counts as well. The NDC numbers for those are 0363-1013-02, 0363-1030-06, 0363-1030-09 in addition to 0363-1030-07.
Rite-Aid removed its store-brand Ranitidine tablets in quantities of 24, 50, 65, and 95-count for its 150 mg version of the drug. The NDC numbers for those tablets are 11822-6051-8, 11822-6052-2, 11822-6052-1, and 11822-4727-3. Rite Aid also recalled a cool mint Ranitidine tablet in 150 mg as well. The NDC number for that particular version is 11822-6107-4.
Ranitidine is a drug that provides relief from symptoms of, and prevention of, heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach.
