Glyphosate related cancer
March 22, 2019 – According to an article published on RT USA, Los Angeles County officials banned the use of all herbicides that contain the chemical glyphosate. Glyphosate is the main ingredient in Monsanto/Bayer’s Roundup Weed Killer herbicides. The decision to ban glyphosate products, such as Roundup, was due to a recent San Francisco court’s ruling that Roundup played a “substantial factor” in a man’s development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This ruling was the second court ruling that linked glyphosate exposure to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Katherine Barger, who sits on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors stated, “I am asking county departments to stop the use of this herbicide until public health and environmental professionals can determine if it’s safe for further use in L.A. County and explore alternative methods for vegetation management.”
Thousands of Lawsuits Seeking Monetary Damages for Glyphosate-related Cancer
The German company Bayer acquired the maker of Roundup, Monsanto in 2018. Last August, a California jury awarded a man over $280 million dollars in his glyphosate non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuit. That jury award was reduced to nearly $80 million. Currently, there are over 11,000 lawsuits filed against Bayer alleging similar injuries.
Science Finds Link Between Glyphosate and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer
In 2015, The World Health Organization conducted an 11-country study on glyphosate and concluded that glyphosate was “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
Then in 2016, a study was published stating glyphosate had “low toxicity for humans.” This study is now being reviewed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA reopened this 2016 study after scientists with links to the agency found users of Roundup have a 40 percent greater risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma than non-users of Roundup.
The State of California added glyphosate to its “known to cause cancer” chemical list in 2017.
As evidence and lawsuits against Bayer continue to multiply, the company continues to maintain their Roundup product is safe and not a carcinogen. Roundup is the world’s most popular and best-selling herbicide. Defense lawyers for Bayer argue that Bayer should not be held liable because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other regulators approved their glyphosate products without requiring cancer risk warnings.
