Grandmother and 8-Year-Old Grandson Sustain Injuries in Queens Pedestrian Accident
QUEENS, NEW YORK – As reported in an online article published by nypost.com, a grandmother and her 8-year-old grandson were struck and injured by a pickup truck while crossing the street.*
A 56-year-old grandmother and her 8-year-old grandson suffered injuries from a late morning pedestrian accident that happened at the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and 115thStreet in Richmond Hill.
The grandmother and grandmother were struck by a Toyota Tundra pickup truck that was attempting to make a left turn. According to police, the grandmother and grandson were in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. The impact of the collision caused the grandmother and grandson to be pinned by the truck.
A 38-year-old food vendor stated he heard a loud “boom,” and turned around to see that a woman and young boy were underneath the Toyota Tundra. Multiple people came to the aid of the woman and young boy, trying to remove them from underneath the pickup truck. After the accident, a man was seen running towards the scene and yelling, “that’s my son, that’s my son.”
The 56-year-old grandmother was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in critical condition. The 8-year-old grandson, whose face was bleeding, was transported to Long Island Jewish Medical Center and listed as being in stable condition.
Whether the driver of the Toyota Tundra (whose name has not been released) will face criminal charges is unclear.
Left-Turn Pedestrian Accidents – How Inattention Can Lead to Severe Injuries and Death
Even with crosswalks, pedestrians are still at risk of being struck by a vehicle. While pedestrians are afforded a certain amount of time to cross a street, vehicles are still able to make turns so long as a crosswalk is clear. However, when drivers are inattentive (especially when making left turns), they run the risk of striking a pedestrian crossing the street. In many cases, a failure to see a pedestrian is the result of inattention, with texting while driving being a common cause. Because pedestrians cannot rely solely on a crosswalk to protect them, they should be extra cautious about looking in all directions before crossing a street.
