DUNNELLON, FL – According to News957.com, a pit bull killed a newborn baby in Florida last week. The dog reportedly climbed into the baby’s crib and attacked her.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and has stated that they do not anticipate criminal charges to be filed. The tragic death appears to be accidental.
Deputies say that they arrived on the scene and saw a family member performing CPR on the baby and that at the time she was still responsive. The infant was transported to the hospital where she was declared dead.
Family members stated that the dog jumped onto a bed and then attacked the baby who was in a bassinet at the time.
The dog was removed from the home by animal control and transported to a local animal shelter where it was euthanized.
Every year, about 4.5 or 4.6 million people in America are bitten by dogs. One out of five dog bites will require some form of medical attention, for instance, because of possible infections. About 20 to 30 people are killed by dogs every year.
Studies have indicated a number of common factors in fatal dog bite incidents. Some commonly seen factors in dog attacks include the owner failing to neuter the dog, no able-bodied person present to intervene, victims with mental disabilities, dogs that were not kept around people (chained in yards), owner mismanagement of dogs, owner’s history of abusing or neglecting dogs, and no familial relationship between the victim and the dog. In the majority of cases, 4 of the above factors existed, or more.
