Daimler trucks
THE UNITED STATES – July 20, 2020 – A trucking industry publication has learned that Daimler Trucks North America announced an extremely large recall initiative of 180,000 tractor-trailer trucks because of the possibility the brakes will fail. According to an article appearing in gobytrucknews.com, the brake defect identified in the 180,000 trucks could cause the truck driver to lose control or fail to stop, which could cause an accident. Industry experts say that the risk of brake failure leading to a crash has increased by ten percent because of the brake malfunction. The risk of sustaining a severe personal injury or death is high when a large truck, such as an 18-wheeler cannot stop when necessary. The announcement was made as the trucking industry begins to celebrate Driver Safety Week.
The enormous recall program announced by Daimler Chrysler involves 164,317 Freightliner Cascadia models in the U.S. The trucks recalled in the U.S., according to CDLLife.com, were manufactured from March 8, 2016, to June 25, 2020. Furthermore, 18,664 Freightliner Cascadia models are now subject to recall in Canada for the same reason.
Daimler Trucks North America explained in the recall notice that corrosion of certain chemicals in the brake system would cause a single brake defect centralized in the modulator valve. The corrosion could cause a slow release in the braking system on the affected side. The company warned that a slow-release on the affected side during an event that signals the brakes to slow the vehicle would pull the truck to one side. The truck will pull toward one side when only one brake is active and cause the driver to lose control over the tractor-trailer. Any loss of control could cause a devastating crash that could kill, disable, or severely injured a truck accident victim.
The company said that notifications would be mailed to drivers, and all repairs required will be made by authorized service techs at a Daimler service facility.
