BROOKLYN, New York — A 67-year-old man was struck and killed by an MTA bus Tuesday afternoon in Brooklyn. Authorities said that the bicycle rider was going north on Rogers Avenue and was hit by the bus when he tried to turn left on Clarendon Road. According to the New York Post, the incident happened around 4:30 in the afternoon. The bus, with eighteen passengers aboard, was heading north on Rogers Avenue as well. Accident investigators from NYPD are trying to determine how the crash happened. Police are particularly interested in the surveillance video from the bus that captures the crash. Investigators have not made any arrests in the case. The MTA bus driver went to the hospital after the crash due to emotional stress brought on by the accident.
Investigators are focusing their attention on what transpired in the few moments before a bicycle rider and an MTA bus collided. Police believe that the bicycle rider tried to turn left from Rogers Avenue on to Clarendon Road. The evidence, police point out, suggests that the bicycle rider cut the bus off. The collision violently threw the 67-year-old rider to the ground. EMS found him unconscious and raced him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County. Doctors in the emergency department at the hospital pronounced the man dead.
The surveillance video should shed some light as to how the crash happened. According to the Post, the surveillance video depicts the bicycle rider in the middle lane of the northbound side of Rogers Avenue. The rider is on or near the boundary of the bus-only lane. At the time the crash happened, the bus was not in the dedicated bus lane. The bus appeared to be remarkably close to the rider just before the crash. The Post says that the video is not clear enough to determine if the bike rider turned on the bus as police have suggested. The investigation continues.
