BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A school bus carrying special needs students and two cars collided in the Mill Basin area. A total of 30 people required an examination at the scene. Some were taken to local hospitals for more intensive treatment while others were allowed to leave after receiving an investigation by a medic. The driver of the car whom officers believe caused the accident was placed into police custody at the location of the accident according to CBS New York. The report did not provide information concerning the identity of the driver placed into police custody or list the charges the driver could face.
New York City police officers assigned to the Mill Basin section of Brooklyn responded to the scene of an auto accident involving two passenger cars and a school bus near the intersection of Avenue U and East 61STStreet. A photo taken by a bystander and reproduced by WPIX 11 shows a black Nissan Altima with substantial front end damage partially in both lanes. The school bus also appears to have front end damage as well. The reports did not describe the damage to the third vehicle involved in the incident. Officers are examining the evidence to determine what happened to cause the crash.
As many as thirty people sustained an injury in the crash. According to a social media post from the Fire Department of New York republished by CBS New York, five people went to area hospitals, including Brookdale Hospital, suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. WPIX 11 said that those hospitalized were school children. Additionally, medics examined 23 other people at the scene and cleared them all. Two people refused medical attention. The investigating officers said that there were 22 children on the bus at the time of the collision.
Neither news outlet specified the charges that the driver whom police took into their custody might face at this time.
