A Multi-Vehicle Crash Involved A Suffolk Country Bus. A multi-vehicle crash shut down the westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway in Islandia.
The accident involved a Suffolk County Transit bus, which was not carrying any passengers. According to police, the incident occurred when the driver of a Pontiac sedan tried to move from the right lane to the HOV lane. The Pontiac hit a Chevrolet in the HOV lane, which “spun out and crashed into the guardrail on the right shoulder,”.
Newsday reports that, according to police, the bus also “spun out”. The bus struck a pickup truck in the left lane, which grazed another sedan. The driver of the Chevrolet was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital. Police said she suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A Suffolk County Transit official told Newsday that the bus driver was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital by ambulance. When the accident occurred, he was en route to a shift change.
The Accident Shut Down The Westbound LIE
The state Department of Transportation said the accident shut down the westbound LIE between Exit 59, Ocean Avenue, and Exit 58, Old Nichols Road. The lanes were reopened within roughly two hours.
An accident in Southold earlier this month killed one man and left a woman injured. The crash happened on Main Bayview near the intersection with Williamsburg Drive. The man driving a Honda coupe north left his lane, hitting the woman who was driving an SUV southbound. Police say the man died at the scene. The woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center.
Recently, an off-duty Suffolk County police officer was arrested following a deadly wrong-way crash on Sunrise Highway in West Islip. The officer was driving in the westbound lanes between exits 40 and 39. The accident occurred between Higbie Lane overpass and Route 231 overpass when the officer struck a 2016 Ford van, which caught fire. The driver of the van died at the scene. The officer was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment.
