Brooklyn Accident Injures NYPD Officers
BROOKLYN, NY – A news report on nydailynews.com states that two NYPD offices were responding to a criminal call in Brooklyn when the officers were involved in a collision with a livery cab. The motor vehicle accident sent both officers to a local area hospital with bone fractures and severe injuries.
The report states that the NYPD police cruiser struck a concrete pillar after colliding with a livery cab that was attempting to make a left turn. The two Public Service Area 2 housing officers responding to a call regarding a shooting. The accident occurred along Livonia Avenue when the cab’s driver, who was heading in the same direction as the officers, tried to turn onto Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the police cruiser. The cab hit the police cruiser’s passenger side, pushing the police car into a concrete pillar.
A Brookdale University Hospital physician, who witnessed the accident, rushed over to assist the injured until first responders could reach the victims. The two NYPD Officers were driving in a marked SUV. One of the officers sustained two broken femurs, a hip injury, and a head injury. The officer was taken to Brookdale Hospital for medical treatment. The other officer sustained a left leg compound fracture, and the officer was transported to Jamaica Hospital.
A witness to the severe accident, a 19-year-old man, was working at the Pennsylvania Deli and Grill when the man stated he heard the collision. The witness stated that one of the officers was “bleeding from his head,” and the other NYPD officer was seen crawling out of the heavily damaged SUV. He also stated that several people working in the area rushed to help the victims.
The cab driver’s friend stated that the taxi driver was on his way to pick up a fare, and he did not see the approaching police SUV. This individual asserted that the cab driver told him that the police SUV was moving very fast and did not have the emergency lights or sirens on prior to the accident.
Police are currently investigating the accident. The NYPD stated that no criminal charges would be filed.
