Officer charged in DWI crash
Queens, NY — According to the New York Post, a man with the rank of captain from the New York Department of Corrections was arrested after allegedly driving while intoxicated and causing a crash that severely injured his passenger. The collision took place Saturday evening around 7:00 p.m. on Laurel Hill Boulevard in Queens. Police reported that the passenger was in critical condition. The captain allegedly drove into a utility pole. There is no new information on the status of neither the passenger nor the driver. Police have charged the driver with at least two crimes.
New York City Police accident investigators are still trying to determine how the 39-year-old Department of Corrections captain lost control over his large, black sedan and slammed into a utility pole. Medics took the 33-year-old passenger to Elmhurst Hospital. The investigating officers said the 33-year-old man suffered from head trauma. The officers did not report on the prognosis for the man. The injured passenger is also a New York City Department of Corrections officer.
The Post included a photo of the accident scene with the story. The picture shows a large black sedan possibly a Ford Crown Victoria with the passenger front side wholly destroyed. The front passenger tire is folded under the axel, the passenger’s side of the front windshield is shattered, the passenger’s front door is removed, and the passenger’s seat appeared to be folded down and collapsed to the ground. The investigating officers did not say if the passenger was wearing a seatbelt. Additionally, law enforcement officers did not indicate whether the blacked-out sedan was a vehicle registered to the Department of Corrections or was the driver’s personal vehicle.
NYPD officers charged the driver with driving while intoxicated (DWI) and refusing to take a breath test. The captain remains innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
