Head on collision in Woodbury, Long Island
WOODBURY, Long Island, New York — A motorist lies in a Nassau County hospital in critical condition, and at least three other people sustained severe injuries when two cars collided head-on in Woodbury. The devastating head-on crash occurred around 7:45 Friday evening at the intersection of Piquets Lane and Woodbury Road. According to an article published by the Syosset, New York Patch, a 77-year-old male, and a 27-year-old female were the drivers involved in the massive collision. First responders from all across the region were deployed to render aid at the scene. Police have not determined which driver might be at fault for the crash. To date, law enforcement investigators have not issued any tickets or made any arrests stemming from the head-on crash.
Police say that a 77-year-old man driving a Lexus sports utility vehicle was critically injured when the vehicle he was operating smashed head-on into a 2017 Toyota minivan driven by the 27-year-old female. Fire and police rescue teams used hydraulic tools and the “Jaws of Life” to extricate the male driver. EMS crews raced him to Nassau University Hospital for emergency trauma treatment. First responders said that the man’s injuries were “life-threatening.”
Police reported that two women, ages 56 and 65, respectively, were severely hurt in the accident as well as the driver. They were passengers in the Toyota minivan. Police described their injuries as multiple traumas that required hospitalization.
Investigators have not said who might have caused the crash. Officers impounded both vehicles so they could perform safety checks. Emergency crews closed Woodbury Road in each direction to clear the debris and continue their investigation.
Photographs taken of the wreckage at the scene of the crash illustrate how much force was applied between the two vehicles when they collided. Accident reconstruction experts will try to determine the speed of each vehicle when entering the intersection and whether either driver applied the brakes before colliding.
