QUEENS, NY – According to queenseagle.com, some of the most likely places to be involved in a car accident in Queens have been identified. An interactive heatmap that incorporates NYPD car crash data was used to compile the most dangerous places within the city for vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The data collected includes 1.4 million crashes which took place in New York between 2012 and January of 2019. Some of the identified dangerous locations include near the Long Island Expressway, the Queens Boulevard, the area around the Grand Central Boulevard and Roosevelt Avenue at 94th Street which is the location of many cyclist accidents.
Pedestrians are at risk in Flushing around the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue and Main Street. In Queens, motor vehicle collisions have been on the rise in recent years. In 2013, there were around 50,000 crashes in the area, and in 2018 there were 60,000.
Fatal accidents are most common during the time period between midnight and 5 in the morning. This is because many of these accidents involve a motorist who is under the influence of alcohol. These crashes are often more severe than collisions at other time of day. The highest number of deadly crashes occur at 4 a.m. which is when the bars in New York City close.
The report can provide valuable information for the city, which is dedicated to eliminating all forms of traffic-related deaths. The Vision Zero initiative has effectively lowered the number of vehicle-related deaths, but as the numbers regarding car crashes in Queens indicate, the gains are not consistent throughout the city, and there are many places that are still deemed dangerous.
