Consumer Reports announced that the luxury automobile manufacturer Porsche recalled almost 30,000 of its luxury sedans, sports cars, and sports utility vehicles due to brake light issues and fuel-line leaks. About one-half of the affected cars experience the brake light problem while the remainder has the fuel-line problem. Porsche will repair the problems at no cost to the consumer. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall program is monitoring the situation. There have been no casualties or deaths announced to this point from either of the problems.
The first recall Porsche issued involves the brand’s Cayenne SUVs and Panamera sedan vehicles. The model years involved are 2017 to 2019. Porsche says that the warning system designed to alert drivers that the vehicle’s brake pads have worn down does not work correctly. Driving with worn brake pads reducing stopping time and accordingly increases the risk of not stopping in time to avoid a collision. The dealership from which the consumer purchased or leased the vehicle will repair the instrument cluster and upgrade the software that operates the sensor free of charge. This recall will not officially begin until April 21, 2019. Porsche determined that 14,110 cars and SUVs are subject to this recall alert.
Meanwhile, Porsche issued a recall to owners or lessees of 14,388 of the Porsche 718 Boxster and the 718 Cayman sports cars. Porsche says that components that make up the luggage compartment can come apart in a collision and rupture the fuel-line. A ruptured fuel line could cause a fire in the event of a crash. The NHTSA discovered the fuel leak problem during crash testing recently.
Porsche will also repair this problem without charging the owner or lessee. This recall will not commence until April 21, 2019, either. Owners and lessees are encouraged to seek repairs for this problem as well. Dealerships will perform the recall repairs for free.
