Rear-end Collision on the Brooklyn Expressway
A news story posted on nydailynews.com reports that an alleged drunk driver in a speeding BMW crashed into a semi-tractor-trailer truck on the Brooklyn Expressway. The collision tragically killed a passenger in the BMW. According to police, the BMW’s driver was speeding on the Gowanus Expressway in his black 535i BMW when the driver rear-ended a white Freightliner that was approaching the 92nd Street Exit in Bay Ridge, New York, at around 11:20 in the evening.
Both motor vehicles were traveling in the middle lane along the Staten Island-bound part of the Brooklyn Expressway. The BMW passenger, a 30-year-old woman, was tragically killed at the accident scene, police stated. The 18-wheeler’s driver, a 46-year-old man, was not injured in the DWI rear-end collision.
Emergency Medical Services took the 30-year-old driver to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn. He was listed as in stable medical condition. The driver was also charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) after he allegedly refused to submit to a breath test.
According to police, the driver has a previous DWI conviction on his criminal record. The driver also was recently charged with criminal assault, menacing, and criminal mischief. In that previous situation, the driver allegedly drove through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. He got into an argument with his passenger, a 21-year-old woman. The driver allegedly punched the passenger in the face and the took her mobile phone away from her to keep her from calling the police.
The accident is currently under investigation by law enforcement.
