NORTH BELLPORT, Long Island, New York — Suffolk County Police detectives attached to the department’s Fifth Squad, with assistance from other agencies, responded to a severe crash in the eastbound lanes of the Route 27, also known as the Sunshine Highway, in North Bellport in Suffolk County to investigate a 911 report of a severe motor vehicle crash. According to an article appearing in the Daily Voice, the 50-year-old driver of a GMC truck perished from the wounds he sustained in the crash. A 77-year-old man who was driving the other vehicle that was involved in the crash was also hurt. Investigators are still gluing together the events which preceded the crash. They have asked for people who possess information about the crash to come forward.
Investigators say that the 77-year-old motorist operated a 2017 Lincoln sedan-style vehicle east on Sunrise Highway. While driving a short distance west of Exit 55 in the town of North Bellport, a 2017 GMC Sierra pickup truck rammed into the rear of the Lincoln. Witnesses reported the crash around 9:45 p.m.
Those same witnesses said that after the two vehicles collided, the Lincoln sedan lost control and entered the center median. Once in the median, the car hit the divider. The GMC Sierra pickup continued on after the initial collision for about 100 feet and slammed into a concrete bridge abutment for the Sills Road overpass.
First responders raced the 50-year-old man driving the GMC pickup to the Long Island Community Hospital located in East Patchogue. Physicians at the hospital pronounced the man deceased from his injuries shortly after arrived.
The 77-year-old man survived the crash. He also received treatment at the Long Island Community Hospital.
Suffolk County Fifth Squad investigators have not completed their investigation. However, investigators impounded both vehicles to conduct safety checks. The investigating officers did not discuss the outcome of the safety checks they performed on the vehicles.
