NEW JERSEY – A fatal construction accident news story on abc7ny.com reports that a construction worker has been tragically killed when the excavator he was using flipped over into a river in New Jersey. Tragically, the worker passed away on Thursday when he was trapped inside the excavator and was unable to escape the freezing waters. The worker was submerged in the freezing cold river water for over an hour leading to his tragic death.
According to the news report, crews frantically attempted to rescue the construction worker from the ice cold water following the excavator rollover accident. However, their attempts to save the worker were unsuccessful. The accident occurred along Tremley Point Road in Linden, New Jersey, at around 8 a.m.
Law enforcement officers investigating the accident scene stated that the excavator was working by the side of the river, and the machine toppled over into around six feet of water in Arthur Kill. The temperature of the water was around 40 degrees.
The news report stated that it took emergency rescue crews and dive teams about one hour to reach the construction worker.
According to Fire Chief William Hasko, the victim was eventually removed from the water once a crane was brought in to lift the excavator. The NYPD Aviation dive team, the Linden Fire Department, along with rescue crews on a Zodiac boat, were able to pull the excavator from the frigid waters.
The construction worker was unresponsive, and he was taken to a local area hospital. He was later pronounced deceased by the hospital staff.
Linden Police Lieutenant Chris Guenther stated that the victim was eventually removed from the excavator’s cab and rushed to Trinitas Hospital. OSHA will be heading up the investigation.
The fatal construction accident investigation is ongoing. The construction company involved did not provide a statement at this time. According to the news report, the company’s OSHA record lists one open investigation from an accident back in August of 202o.
