SYNDEY, Australia — The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reports that law enforcement authorities in Australia have opened an investigation into the COVID-19 outbreak on the Ruby Princess. The Ruby Princess is a cruise ship that belongs to the Carnival Cruise Lines company. Australian authorities claim that the cruise line allowed passengers who were positive with COVID-19 to leave the ship and come ashore in Sydney even though they were showing symptoms of the deadly virus. COVID-19 killed ten people aboard the Ruby Princess, and 600 people fell ill from the virus, including 200 sick crew. The ship, along with its crew, says off the Sydney coast for several days after the passengers disembarked from the contaminated vessel.
Detectives from New South Wales opened an inquiry to determine if the cruise line violated Australia’s biosecurity laws. The stricken passengers aboard the ship total ten percent of all cases of the novel coronavirus in the country. At the time the cruise ship lay off the coast of Sydney, 5,548 people were positive for COVID-19, and 30 had lost their fight with the virus. Australia managed to keep the number of infections and deaths low due to stringent social distancing rules, closing restaurants, parks, workout centers, and cafes.
The Police Commissioner from New South Wales wanted answers. He indicated that Australia law allows a ship docking privileges and to permit passengers off of the ship solely when the ship’s captain can assure authorities that the ship’s passengers and crew were free from contagious diseases. The Commissioner said that he observed discrepancies among pieces of information provided by the cruise line.
While approaching Sydney, an employee onboard called for emergency help for two passengers who fell critically ill the day before the boat arrived at Sydney, and passengers were allowed to disembark. Representatives of the Ruby Princess told local authorities that the cruise ship experienced no issue with the coronavirus. The information provided by the representatives was false.
