MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA – A news report posted on cbslocal.com states that city officials evacuated a third residential building in Miami-Dade due to concerns the apartment building has structural deficiencies. The City of Miami Beach issued a vacate order to all Devon Apartments residents after building inspectors investigators discovered the 82-year-old residential building had structural flaws. The apartment building is located at 69th Street at Indian Creek Drive. City officials did not disclose whether or not the building was in danger of collapsing.
According to residents, the tenants were given less than one week’s notice to vacate the property. Some tenants receive only four days’ notice to move out of their apartment. Some residents were left wondering where to go, and some ended up going to shelters. Those affected by the vacate notice stated that they were not given any justification for the short-notice vacate order.
According to the property owners’ attorney, the building has been “fully vacated and secured.” He also stated that the building would be demolished in the next few months and that the property owners will develop a new project.
Other residential buildings in the area have been evacuated this month due to alleged structural problems. On July 2, the Crestview Towers in North Miami Beach were evacuated because city officials reported the building has electrical and structural issues. Approximately 300 residents were forced to leave their homes. The 24-unit Champs Elysses building on Miami Beach was evacuated on July 3 due to “excessive deflection on an exterior wall” and an alleged flooring system failure.
Miami-Dade County and cities within the county are inspecting buildings that are 40-year-old and older. The City of Miami Beach ordered a visual inspection of all buildings inside city limits that are older than 40 years.
