NASSAU COUNTY, NY- liherald.com reports that a fatal motorcycle crash occurred in Bellmore when a motorcycle hit the rear end of a tanker truck. The collision took place in Sunrise Highway’s westbound lanes around 4 in the afternoon on Sunday, October 21, 2018.
The motorcyclist was identified as a 44-year-old man. The motorcyclist was operating a 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle. When the motorcyclist attempted to stop his vehicle, it slid into the back of the truck. A police medic pronounced the victim dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the truck was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The westbound lanes were shut down while police carried out the investigation into the collision.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reminds motorcyclists that these vehicles offer riders far less protection than passenger vehicles. Motorcycles are also less stable than cars because they are balanced on only two wheels rather than four. Also, given their smaller size, motorcycles are often more difficult to see than other larger vehicles, leading to the possibility of them being overlooked by drivers.
The lack of protection provided to motorcyclists by their vehicles leads to a greater risk of injury and death. In fact, 80 percent of all crashes involving motorcycles lead to injuries or fatalities. Many motorcycle crashes, about 40 percent, involve only the motorcycle and no other vehicle.
One extremely important thing for motorcyclists to remember is that they should never ride while under the influence of alcohol. About 43 percent of deadly motorcycle accidents involve alcohol. Motorcycles require greater skill and focus than driving. Alcohol can severely impact a rider’s ability to operate his or her vehicle safely.
