BEEKMAN, NY- KWBE.com reports that two people died in a helicopter accident when their aircraft struck power lines in northern New York and caught fire. The accident took place on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at around 4:16 p.m.
The crash was caught on video which shows the aircraft on fire and falling after it struck the power lines.
There were four men in the helicopter when the crash took place. All of the occupants jumped out. Two were taken to the hospital for treatment. The company that owned the helicopter, Catalyst Aviation, provides personnel and equipment used in power-line inspections.
The helicopter appears to have been used to perform work on the power lines. It was not immediately clear what had gone wrong.
A witness to the crash said that she saw the smoke and the flames and people performing CPR on the victims. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are carrying out an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Helicopter accidents have been on the decline in recent years, and yet, this form of transportation is often viewed as riskier than others. In some ways, helicopters do appear to be less safe than other forms of aviation. When the number of deaths per hours I the air is viewed, it seems that helicopters present greater risks than the rate of fatal accidents for aviation in general.
However, the numbers are likely skewed by the fact that helicopters are often used in hazardous situations. Helicopters are operated for rescue missions, and sometimes pilots must fly in bad weather and in places and times that are not ideal for aviation.
