LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY- According to Patch.com, the name of a man killed in a vehicle collision on the Long Island Expressway on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, has been released.
The victim, John Palmer, 28, was driving westbound in a 2014 Freightliner Truck when he struck a 2006 Kia Sportage in Lake Ronkonkoma. Palmer lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway before hitting the overpass of Ronkonkoma Avenue.
The physician’s assistant with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner declared Palmer dead at the scene. The 30-year-old man operating the Kia sis not sustain any injuries and stayed at the scene of the crash.
The crash is still under investigation.
Large trucks are involved in thousands of fatal collisions every year. In 2016, 3,986 people were killed in crashes involving large trucks. Most of the victims in these accidents are people traveling in other vehicles. Only 17 percent of large truck accident victims are people who were in the large trucks at the time of the crash. Sixty-six percent of the victims are individuals who were in other vehicles like cars or SUVs, and 16 percent of victims are pedestrians, motorcyclists, or cyclists.
It is somewhat rare for the operator of a large truck to be killed in a collision involving both the truck and a passenger vehicle. Out of all deadly collisions that involve cars and trucks, 97 percent of the victims were people in another vehicle at the time of the collision.
Large trucks are large and not easy to maneuver. It is difficult for them to make quick movements to avoid collisions. These vehicles, when loaded, can take between 20 and 40 percent farther to stop than a car would.
