CORTLANDT, NY- Lohud.com reports that a man from Putnam Valley is facing felony charges for assault after causing a crash that injured three teenagers. The driver, 32-year-old Kevin Singleton, was arrested after the collision and was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol. Reports indicate that Singleton’s blood alcohol concentration was three times the legal limit for drivers.
Police reports indicate that Singleton was driving southbound a little after 7:05 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2018, when he veered into the northbound lanes. Singleton’s 2013 Ford F-150 struck an oncoming 2017 Honda Civic head-on.
Three teenagers were in the Honda when the accident took place, and all of them sustained injuries. One of the teens suffered serious injuries, although none of the injuries were described as life-threatening. Singleton was charged with several criminal offenses, including second-degree vehicular assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, aggravated driving while intoxicated, and third-degree assault.
Drunk driving deaths have dropped significantly over the last few decades. Despite progress, drunk drivers are still a major cause of vehicle collisions. An average of 29 people are killed in America daily as a result of drink drivers. In total, over 10,000 lives are lost to drunk drivers every year. About one out of every three people killed in traffic accidents die in crashes involving a drunk driver. While the legal limit is .08 percent in every state, even lower levels of alcohol in a person’s system can impair their ability to drive.
Groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have been working for many years to improve roadway safety by eliminating drunk driving. The group promotes sobriety checkpoints and highly visible law enforcement, ignition interlocks for convicted offenders, better vehicle technology, and public support for anti-drunk driving campaigns as ways to eliminate drunk driving tragedies.
