Marble Handrail Accident
BRONX, NEW YORK – According to an online news report from dailymail.co.uk, an 8-year-old girl was tragically killed following a marble handrail landing on top of her at her Bronx home. The child was playing with her friend when a marble handrail collapsed and fell on top of her. The accident happened outside her New York City home. The young girl’s name was not made public.
According to the news article, the victim and her friend were playing on the front porch of her home located along Zerega Avenue in Westchester Square at approximately 8 PM. The kids tried to fit through the marble columns when a portion of the handrails collapsed and landed on top of the small child.
NYPD sources told the reporters that the child’s mother was cooking along with relatives when the mother heard a girl scream. Everyone rushed outside and discovered the little girl trapped underneath a piece of the marble handrail. She sustained traumatic injuries to her head.
The little girl was then rushed to Jacobi Hospital for treatment of her serious head trauma. She was tragically pronounced dead later that day.
Building inspectors and police investigated the fatal accident scene and examined the marble handrail collapse. The report states that pieces of the broken marble banister were found scattered around the front of the home.
The victim’s aunt stated to the investigators that the family had just moved into the apartment approximately three months ago. The report states that the previous owner of the apartment warned them about the loose banister.
According to online records from the Department of Buildings, the NYPD asked for a structural stability inspection of the front porch two hours after the tragic accident.
