STATEN ISLAND, NY- SILIVE.com reports that delays were reported on Tuesday Morning, October 17, 2018, on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. MTA buses were experiencing delays during rush hour. Reports indicate that a bus accident occurred on the Staten Island Expressway close to Hyland Boulevard in the eastbound lanes. The crash caused heavy traffic all the way back to the Goethals Bridge.
The collision occurred around 5:34 a.m. and the road was cleared by about 6:45 a.m.
By 7:30 a.m., traffic was still delayed leading to many MTA bus lines running behind schedule.
Morning commuters cause predictably heavy traffic near major cities. The result of so many cars being so close together is a greater risk for traffic accidents. The more densely packed the roads are, the more likely it is that there will be collisions.
While rush hour traffic takes place both in the morning and in the late afternoon/evening hours, the later rush hour typically has more crashes and more crash-related fatalities. In fact, evening rush hour is one of the more dangerous times to be on the road.
At the end of the day, drivers are often tired and are rushing to get home. At this time of day, there are chances of aggressive driving and distracted driving. Aggressive driving includes dangerous behaviors like speeding and following too closely behind other vehicles. This type of behavior makes car crashes more likely to occur. It is important to find ways to stay calm while driving in frustrating situations such as rush hour. Of course, commuting can also be boring. Drivers should not give in to the temptation to look at a phone while operating a vehicle. Distracted driving kills thousands of people every year.
